I just got this mix for the first time, 95' was a few years before I got into electronic music hardcore and I have to say it's a great mix. This is a great pre or post night mix and is fast becoming one of my favorite new/old comps. I got it in Flac so it sounds quite good and you can really hear all the little nuances of vinyl.
In my top 10 after party mixes!!! Seriously, one of, if not the BEST "Afterhours" "Come-Down" mix of the 90's or maybe ever!?!?!
I tend to agree. It's a perfect blend of lush, "intelligent" Detroit-ish techno that manages to be both ambient and driving at the same time. The vintage "authentic vinyl mix" sort of feel to it adds to its "organic" vibe as well. It's definitely a rare DJ mix that has you coming back over two decades later!
This mix is just sublime. It is a shining example of how to create deep textures and atmospheres in electronic music and it hasn't been jaded by time (20 years!?). The flow of the mix is gentle and the tunes have a soulful detroit groove with dreamy psychedelia sprinkled throughout, the deep strings and pads giving the impression of wallowing in a warm bath. A beautiful compilation.
I have to agree with the other reviewers. This is one of the finest techno mix CDs ever, maybe the best. At this point in the mid-nineties there were so many artists at the peak of their game. A fairly even balance of American and European producers, Detroit looms large as does Dave's love of jazz but this is very much about the dancefloor. Every track is packed with groove and force but this is no exercise in bangin' techno but rather a musical, emotional and funky tour de force from beginning to end. These tracks are now all more than 17 years old - amazing considering how fresh they sound. All bright lights and rampant futurism - what techno is all about.
This has got to be one of the best deep-techno mixes of the nineties.
Possibly my favorite techno mix of all time. I am more of a lighter side of techno lover because I like easy going Detroit techno and ambient music. This mix has nice and gentle techno that is deep and other-worldly throughout. Very nicely mixed with good speed becoming more sequed that mixed for long periods. Which with allot of the these melodies it's best to just fade over the slider quicker which Dave did well. Very fine mix which I have on different formats because it means allot
An inspired, memorable mix that is almost entirely track selection and compilation. No knob-twiddling trickery- in fact not a few of the mixes are technically very weak- but somehow thanks to the supreme tracks he's chosen and his compositional acumen, it's a true journey- which can only be said about the best mixtapes/CDs. I say inspired because I think that Dave Angel is, generally, a bit self-absorbed and overrated. But any guy who puts two Dan Curtin tracks on a mix can't be half bad, right? And any way you slice it, if you enjoyed deep, melodic techno in the early 90's you should listen to this CD.
Kodiak: per capita I think Dutch techno producers from the early and mid 90s really took a focus on melodic deepness to an extreme level. I mention this in a review of Steve Rachmad's remix of JohnNick's Play the World, that Derrick May and D Wynn lived in Holland for a bit in the 90s and I think it could be a source, or maybe an effect, of an overlap of styles. There are some melodic tracks in Derrick's sets from that time I've never been able to identify, so good hunting. Jeroen Verheij, Steve Rachmad, and Rene and Gaston in all of their incarnations, are names to start with.
Any recommendations on other deep melodic techno from the nineties?
X-Mix 4 "Beyond the Heavens" figures among the most important contributions from the master Dave Angel. At that time, most precisely in 1995, he regularly spinned gorgeous repertoires with clear Detroit Techno influences, from Kenny Larkin's 'Soul Man' to his personal tracks, deeply inspired by the Techno pioneers from the Motor City. With incredible good taste for music, Dave choosed very special pieces for this compilation, including deep introspective techno to the more dancefloor, funky and sophisticated, many of them with beautiful drop outs.
